The Dog Breeding Reform Group is holding a symposium about hereditary and breed-related skin problems in dogs on Sunday 6th November 2022


The symposium is for vets, vet students, dog owners, dog breeders, vet nurses, breed health co-ordinators, dog welfare organisations, and anyone interested in canine health and welfare.

Speaker Biographies

Peter Egan Actor and Animal Rights Advocate
Peter has been an actor for over 50 years. He has recently starred in ‘Downton Abbey,’ ‘Unforgotten,’ ‘After Life 2,’ ‘The Spanish Princess 2.’ He is best known for ‘Ever Decreasing Circles.’ Peter is also a trustee, patron or ambassador for over twenty different charities. These include  RSPCA Vice-President, UK Ambassador for Animals Asia, Patron for @CIWF to name just a few. Peter is a multi-award winning actor and has also received a variety of awards for his commitment to animals and our planet. He received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Winchester in 2017 for his services to Animal Welfare.

Dr. Dan O'Neill VetCompass™ Senior Lecturer in Companion Animal Epidemiology, Royal Veterinary College MVB BSc(hons) GPCert(SAP) GPCert(FelP) GPCert(Derm) GPCert(B&PS) MSc(VetEpi) PhD FRCVS
After graduating in veterinary medicine from Dublin in 1987, Dan worked in large and small animal general practice until 2009. After an MSc and then PhD in veterinary epidemiology from 2009-2014 at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) to develop the VetCompass™ programme of research, he is now Senior Lecturer in Companion Animal Epidemiology at RVC. Dan has authored over 50 VetCompass™ papers since 2012 providing welfare evidence relevant to UK companion animals. He has co-authored the third edition of the book, ‘Breed Predispositions to Disease in Dogs and Cats’ as well as a book on hamster health, ‘Hamsters: in sickness and in health’. His current research programme focuses on breed-related health issues in dogs and cats. Dan is a trustee of DBRG.

Dr. Emma Milne BVSc MRCVS, Founder of Vets Against Brachycephalism
Emma graduated from Bristol university in 1996. After 12 years in practice she worked as a clinical nutrition advisor for seven years.

Emma was a trustee of the Animal Welfare Foundation for six years and sat as their representative on the BVA Ethics and Welfare group for two years. She has written ten books on pet animal welfare and pedigree health problems and spoken at various conferences on different animal welfare subjects such as pedigree dog and cat health, the ethics of showing and the welfare of elite horses. She is a patron of the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund (RWAF) and has worked with many other welfare charities such as the Brooke and Dogs Trust. Emma is a Full Member of DBRG.

Dr. Naomi Harvey Associate Professor, PhD, BSc
​Dr Harvey is a zoologist with a specialty in applied animal behaviour and veterinary health and welfare. Since November 2019 Naomi has been working at the Dogs Trust as a Research Manager in Canine Behaviour and she holds an honorary position as an Associate Professor of Companion Animal Behaviour and Welfare at the University of Nottingham. With a BSc in Zoology from Cardiff University and PhD in applied canine behaviour from the University of Nottingham, Naomi has a particular speciality in designing and validating methods for securing robust and valid measures of animal behaviour from their owners and carers. Naomi also has expertise in veterinary epidemiology, having successfully designed and led the Itchy Dog project to investigate the environmental and genetic risk factors for canine atopic dermatitis and its impact on dog behaviour. Her research interests lie in improving the evidence base for issues affecting companion animal welfare within the fields of veterinary medicine and clinical animal behaviour, to better inform how we manage and treat the animals in our care.

Tatiana Lima
Tatiana graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), Portugal, in 2005.

During ten years in general practice in Portugal, she dedicated most of her time to dermatology and in 2014-15 she completed three dermatology courses at the European School of Advanced Veterinary Studies in Vienna, Austria.

In 2016, Tatiana started a three-year residency at the European College of Veterinary Dermatology (ECVD) at the Hospital Clinic Veterinari of the Fundació Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and in 2020, she became a diplomate of ECVD.

Tatiana is currently working as dermatologist in North Downs Specialist Referrals since September 2021.

Clare Rusbridge BVMS PhD DipECVN FRCVS RCVS and European Specialist in Veterinary Neurology
Clare graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1991 and following an internship at the University of Pennsylvania and general practice in Cambridgeshire, she completed a BSAVA/Petsavers Residency and was Staff Clinician in Neurology at the Royal Veterinary College. She became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Neurology in 1996 and a RCVS Specialist in 1999. In 2007 she was awarded a PhD from Utrecht University for her thesis on Chiari-like malformation and Syringomyelia.  For sixteen years she operated a neurology and neurosurgery referral service at the Stone Lion Veterinary Hospital in Wimbledon. In September 2013 Clare joined Fitzpatrick Referrals and the University of Surrey. Her professional interests include epilepsy, neuropathic pain, inherited diseases, and rehabilitation following spinal injury. She treats many animals with painful and/or distressing inherited disease which motivates her research which aims to find a better way of diagnosing, treating and preventing these conditions. She was awarded the J. A. Wright Memorial Award by The Blue Cross Animal Welfare Charity in 2011 for her work with Syringomyelia. In 2014 she received the FECVA award for best original paper also on Syringomyelia and in 2016 she was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Clare has authored or co-authored over 100 scientific articles and book chapters including being co-editor for a medical textbook on Syringomyelia published by Springer. Clare is a trustee of DBRG.
